📊1. U.S. business formation activity
Behind every one of these applications is a new entity entering the credit system for the first time.
The U.S. Census Bureau publishes Business Formation Statistics (BFS) monthly, based on IRS Form SS-4 EIN applications. The "business applications" figure is a leading indicator — it captures intent to form a business roughly 11–12 days after each month closes, before that intent necessarily becomes an operating company.

We're publishing only the months we've independently pulled and verified directly from Census Bureau releases — we'll add February, March, and April 2026 as we confirm those figures, rather than estimate them. The Census Bureau's June 2026 release (covering May data) was the most recent available as of this page's last update; the next release was scheduled for July 9, 2026.
Separately, the Census Bureau's Projected Business Formations series estimates how many of a given month's applications will actually become employer businesses with payroll within four quarters. For May 2026, that projection was 29,493, up 3.3% from April.

This table will grow as we confirm additional verified policy changes — we're not backfilling it with unconfirmed items just to make it look bigger.
🔍3. Methodology & sourcing
Every figure on this page is pulled directly from the issuing government agency's own published release — the U.S. Census Bureau's Business Formation Statistics program and the U.S. Small Business Administration's public policy notices. We link to the specific source document for each figure, not a secondary summary of it.
We do not publish estimates, projections, or "typical outcome" statistics of our own. If a number on this page isn't directly attributable to a named primary source, it doesn't belong here — see our full PressFounder QuestionsEditorial Standards for how we handle sourcing and corrections.
