• It reduces your active trade references: Business credit scores (such as the Dun & Bradstreet PAYDEX score) rely heavily on the total number of active vendors reporting positive payment experiences. Closing an account removes an active trade reference, resulting in a thinner, weaker credit file.
• It lowers your available credit: When you close an account, your total available credit drops. If your business carries balances on other cards or loans, reducing your available credit will instantly increase your credit utilization ratio — a key metric that can drag down your score if it gets too high.
• It halts positive payment momentum: Open, active accounts build a continuous, rolling history of on-time payments. Once a tradeline is closed, it stops feeding fresh, positive data to the business credit bureaus, stalling the momentum you need to grow your score.
