โ๏ธ The Verdict
โEvery state's LLC filing happens through its Secretary of State (or equivalent) business division โ no paid formation service is required to file.
โPaid formation services (LegalZoom, Northwest, etc.) just submit the same form to the same government office, for a markup.
โLinks below go directly to each state's official business filing division, not a search results page.
โOnce your LLC is filed and you have your EIN, the next step is registering with the business credit bureaus โ see our DUNS Number Registration Wizard.
๐1. Why file directly instead of through a paid service
Every LLC in the United States is formed by filing Articles of Organization (or a similarly named document) with a specific state government office โ usually the Secretary of State, though a few states route this through a different department (Delaware's Division of Corporations, Florida's Department of State, and a handful of others). Paid formation services don't file anywhere different โ they fill out and submit the exact same government form, for a service fee on top of the state's own filing fee.
Filing directly costs nothing extra beyond the state's own fee. See our LLC & EIN formation costs by state guide for exactly what each state charges.
๐2. Official filing links, all 50 states + DC
Links go directly to each state's official business/corporate filing division. These are the actual government offices โ bookmark this page rather than searching each time, since these URLs occasionally change when states update their systems.
Links verified as of July 2026. State government sites do occasionally restructure โ if a link is broken, search "[state name] Secretary of State business division" to find the current page, or let us know and we'll update it.
Once your LLC is officially filed, get your free EIN directly from the IRS, then register with the business credit bureaus. See the ultimate guide to building business credit for the full sequence.
BCC Supplies is not affiliated with any state government office; links are provided for convenience and point to official .gov (or state-equivalent) resources. This page is general information, not legal advice โ confirm current filing requirements and fees directly with your state.
